  Chalk Walk

Event Date: 8/11/2012

On Saturday, August 11, 2012 the 8th Annual Chalk Walk returns to Green Lake! Artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register for this fun, family-friendly event. With its roots steeped in history, street painting dates back to 16th century Europe, where Italian artists were called “Madonnari”, because they often painted images of the Madonna. In the mid-1970’s, street painting made its way to the United States. Given the moderate weather, festivals began cropping up all over, starting with the I Madonnari festival at the Santa Barbara Mission in Santa Barbara, California. Since then, street painting or chalk walk festivals have increased in popularity across the U.S. Following local tradition, Green Lake will host artists who will transform the dull, grey concrete downtown sidewalks into colorful, pastel pathways. Kids and parents will join local, amateur and practicing artists to create anything their artistic minds can imagine.  The festivities get underway with 9 a.m. contest registration at Arts of Daycholah, 526 Mill Street, Green Lake. Artists registering that day will be assigned a location in the downtown district. All artists must have their creations complete by 3pm, as judging will take place from 3 – 4 p.m. The winners of each category will then be announced and prizes awarded. Artists may pre-register before August 6th at the Green Lake Chamber of Commerce office located at 550 Mill Street or by emailing info@visitgreenlake.com. Artists may choose the location of their 4’ x 4’ square on a first-come, first-served basis. The entry fee for artists is $5.00 and $10.00 for families which covers the cost of chalk. A photo of the winning artists will be featured in local publications, and exciting cash prizes will be awarded in the following categories:  Age 5-7, Age 8-15, Age 16+, Family, and Professional.  Spectators are encouraged to pick up a map at Arts of Daycholah and visit each artists’ masterpiece. If you manage to visit all of the squares and jot down the names of each, you can enter to win a special prize. Ask for more details when picking up your map. Spend the day shopping and dining in Green Lake while taking in the beautiful works of art that will blanket the otherwise ordinary sidewalks. Be sure to stop in at Arts of Daycholah for light refreshments that will be on sale. For more information visit their website at www.visitgreenlake.com (http://www.visitgreenlake.com (http://www.visitgreenlake.com)) or call 920.294.3231
